Zīdot bērnu, sieviete rūpējas ne tikai par bērna veselību, bet arī
par savējo. Ja sieviete zīda savu bērnu, tad viņai ir mazāks risks saslimt ar
hipertenziju, II tipa diabētu, hiperlipidēmiju, sirds un asinsvadu slimībām,
krūts vēzi, olnīcu vēzi (Steube et al., 2010) reimatisko artrītu (Pikwer et
al., 2009), pēcdzemdību depresiju (Dennis et al., 2009) u.c. slimībām.
Nozīme
ir arī zīdīšanas ekskluzivitātei līdz 6 mēnešiem un zīdīšanas ilgumam, jo riski
saslimt samazinās ar katra zīdīta bērna pieredzi, summējot kopā zīdīšanas
ilgumu mēnešos (Pikwer et al., 2009; Schwarz
et al, 2009; Jordan, 2010; Lancet, 2002 ). Ja bērns ir
zīdīts vai saņēmis mātes pienu, tad viņam ir mazāks risks saslimt ar dažāda
veida infekcijām, zīdaiņa pēkšņo nāves sindromu, aptaukošanos, nekrotizējošo
enterokolītu, atopisko dermatītu, bērnu onkoloģiskām slimībām, astmu un I vai II
tipa cukura diabētu (Chung et al., 2007).
